Knowledge Based Framework for Cyber Weapons and Conflict
نویسنده
چکیده
In recent years there have been a number of international conflicts that have been mirrored by a parallel campaign of hostile actions in cyberspace. This, in turn, has prompted various attempts to analyze the phenomenon and explain the threat to the wider public. Unfortunately, however, the reports and analysis are often confusing and can include rather arbitrary use of various cyber “buzz words“. It follows that there is a need for a formal rigorous model for describing and analyzing cyber conflicts. Formal methods are also necessary for developing artificial intelligence-enabled offensive and defensive systems for cyber conflicts. In order to provide a remedy for this issue, we propose a formalized framework of key terms in cyber conflict. We begin by revisiting the concepts of knowledge, data and information. Based on that we proceed to define “information system” and “intelligent system”. We provide a formal description for the concept of destroying and falsifying information and explain the concepts of confidentiality, integrity and availability as part of our framework. We then propose definitions for cyber weapons, cyber incidents, cyber attacks, cyber espionage, cyber conflicts and finally, cyberwar. The framework is based on formal logic and allows for theoretical, experimental or empirical research with mathematically provable results. As such, it can provide a solid backbone for cyber conflict research, which is often based on less rigorous methods.

A Vulnerability-Based Model of Cyber Weapons and its Implications for Cyber Conflict
Throughout history, mankind has developed and employed novel weapons and countermeasures. Both offensive and defensive weapon systems are limited by the laws of nature. Consequently, military concepts and doctrines were designed by implicitly taking into account those limitations. The digital age has introduced a new class of weaponry that poses an initial challenge to the common understanding ...
متن کاملCyber Conflicts as a New Global Threat
In this paper, an attempt is made to analyze the potential threats and consequences of cyber conflicts and, in particular, the risks of a global cyber conflict. The material is based on a comprehensive analysis of the nature of cyber conflict and its elements from both technical and societal points of view. The approach used in the paper considers the societal component as an essential part of ...
متن کاملStuxnet: What Has Changed?
This paper considers the impact of Stuxnet on cyber-attacks and cyber-defense. It first reviews trends in cyber-weapons and how Stuxnet fits into these trends. Because Stuxnet targeted an industrial control system in order to wreak physical damage, the focus is on weapons that target systems of that type and produce physical effects. The paper then examines the impact of Stuxnet on various doma...
متن کاملKeeping Cool Steps for Avoiding Conflict and Escalation in Cyberspace
International cyber conflicts will become more frequent and intense. Several current trends prompt this pessimism: ongoing quantitative and qualitative cyber arms races among state actors, the proliferation of cyber weapons among state and non-state actors, a widely shared conventional wisdom that these weapons favor offense over defense, and no broadly accepted definition of the cyber attacks ...

The emergence of nuclear weapons as a new actor in international relations has introduced a new area in the international security arena. Since the appearance of these weapons, there have been increasing efforts to limit and destroy them in order to achieve global peace in the framework of disarmament and centered around the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons. Along with the eme...
